The Burglar and the Blizzard: A Christmas Story
  • Author : Alice Duer Miller

  • ISBN Code: 1465515739

Summary: Geoffrey was born with a love of adventure, and his dislike to his present expedition arose not from fear, but from a consciousness that if he did run into a den of thieves he would think himself such an ass to have come. Indeed, there seemed a fair chance that he might think this even if nothing worse happened than that the hut proved empty, for he would have had a long walk for nothing better than to provide McVay with an opportunity to escape. He did not see exactly how McVay could get out, but he was aware that few people would think it wise to leave a burglar locked in a closet in an empty house with some hours of leisure at his disposal. The first glimmering of dawn was visible as he stepped off the piazza; the wind was blowing fiercely and the snow still falling. He had not gone a hundred yards before he knew that the expedition was to be more difficult than he had imagined. To make headway against the wind was a constant struggle, and he seemed to slip back in the snow at every step. Still the natural obstinacy of his nature was aroused, and as his attention was more and more engaged with the endeavor to make his way, he had less time to think of the probable futility of his proceeding.

  • Category: True Crime
  • Pages : 336
  • ISBN Code: 0143527827

Summary: Arthur Goldstuck - South Africa's urban legends guru - returns with a definitive guide to the hoaxes and rumours that have terrified and confused South Africans over the last twenty years. Why did an estimated 10 000 South Africans go on 'holiday' to Zimbabwe in April 1994? Who, exactly, decided that needles covered in AIDS-infected blood were being left on cinema seats in Cape Town in 1999? How did it come to be reported in several reputable newspapers that the South African government was considering cancelling Christmas in August 2004? Whatever happened to the ' tornado' that was supposed to descend on Johannesburg and Pretoria to devastating effect on 8 October 2007? Did the 100 000 women and children set to be trafficked into South Africa for the 2010 World Cup actually arrive? Have you ever cleared your driveway of 'colour-coded' rubbish, held back from flashing your lights at someone for fear of becoming a victim of a gang initiation rite or forwarded an email about child abduction to your friends and family? If so, have you ever wondered about the origins of these warnings? In this new book, Arthur Goldstuck not only traces the evolution of these urban legends but also digs deep into the human psyche to explain why it is that we are drawn into believing and passing on these warnings even when incontrovertible proof exists that they are false.

Coping with Burglary
  • Author : R.V.G. Clarke,T. Hope
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release Date : 2012-12-06
  • Category: Business & Economics
  • Pages : 261
  • ISBN Code: 9400956525

Summary: This book contains the papers given at a workshop organised by the Home Office (England and Wales) on the subject of residential burglary. This is a topic of much public concern, and I welcome the Home Office initiative in mounting the workshop. The contributors were all researchers and crim inologists who have made a special study of burglary, and their brief was to consider the implications of their work for policy. As a policeman, I find their work of particular interest and relevance at this time when police per formance, as traditionally measured by the clear-up rate, is not keeping pace with the increase in the numbers of burglaries coming to police attention. The finding that increases in burglary are more reflective of the public's reporting habits than of any significant rise in the actual level of burglary helps with perspective but offers little comfort to policemen. The 600/0 in crease in the official statistics since 1970 is accompanied by a proportionate increase in police work in visiting victims, searching scenes of crime, writing crime reports, and completing other documentation. In some forces the point has been reached where available detective time is so taken up by the volume of visits and reports that there is little remaining for actual in vestigation. But because of the random and opportunist nature of burglary, it cannot be said with any confidence that increasing investigative capacity would make a significant and lasting impact on the overall burglary figures.

Science, Faith and Society
  • Author : Michael Polanyi
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release Date : 1964-08-15
  • Category: Philosophy
  • Pages : 96
  • ISBN Code: 9780226672908

Summary: In its concern with science as an essentially human enterprise, Science, Faith and Society makes an original and challenging contribution to the philosophy of science. On its appearance in 1946 the book quickly became the focus of controversy. Polanyi aims to show that science must be understood as a community of inquirers held together by a common faith; science, he argues, is not the use of "scientific method" but rather consists in a discipline imposed by scientists on themselves in the interests of discovering an objective, impersonal truth. That such truth exists and can be found is part of the scientists' faith. Polanyi maintains that both authoritarianism and scepticism, attacking this faith, are attacking science itself.

Mathematical Modeling
  • Author : Sandip Banerjee
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release Date : 2014-02-07
  • Category: Mathematics
  • Pages : 276
  • ISBN Code: 1439854513

Summary: Almost every year, a new book on mathematical modeling is published, so, why another? The answer springs directly from the fact that it is very rare to find a book that covers modeling with all types of differential equations in one volume. Until now. Mathematical Modeling: Models, Analysis and Applications covers modeling with all kinds of differential equations, namely ordinary, partial, delay, and stochastic. The book also contains a chapter on discrete modeling, consisting of differential equations, making it a complete textbook on this important skill needed for the study of science, engineering, and social sciences. More than just a textbook, this how-to guide presents tools for mathematical modeling and analysis. It offers a wide-ranging overview of mathematical ideas and techniques that provide a number of effective approaches to problem solving. Topics covered include spatial, delayed, and stochastic modeling. The text provides real-life examples of discrete and continuous mathematical modeling scenarios. MATLAB® and Mathematica® are incorporated throughout the text. The examples and exercises in each chapter can be used as problems in a project. Since mathematical modeling involves a diverse range of skills and tools, the author focuses on techniques that will be of particular interest to engineers, scientists, and others who use models of discrete and continuous systems. He gives students a foundation for understanding and using the mathematics that is the basis of computers, and therefore a foundation for success in engineering and science streams.

What Kind of America
  • Author : R. Eugene Spitzer
  • Publisher : iUniverse
  • Release Date : 2012-08-15
  • Category: Political Science
  • Pages : 252
  • ISBN Code: 9781475942811

Summary: This is an excellent book for people who are tired and fed up with what they see happening to their country. Whether it’s failing schools, a failing federal government, a failing economy, huge debt, and massive unemployment, you’ll want to read this book. Hollywood is a cesspool, likened to Soddom and Gomorrah, RAP music offends almost everyone, and is full of degrading lyrics; the whole alternative energy push by this President is a scam; man-made global warming is another big scam, and Al Gore is making tens of millions of dollars from it. What’s all this stuff about diversity being good for America? Show me. You want alternative energy to replace oil? It’ll be here in about 25 years; get over it. Our federal government is broken, out of control, and arrogant, and unable to effectively govern. We should toss them all out and start over, using the Constitution as the standard for office. It’s all in here, and it is most assuredly politically incorrect. The author does not subscribe to Cultural Marxism from which politically correct evolved. If you are easily offended, don’t read this book because if you’re offended, it’s your problem, not his. This is volume 1 in what the author believes will be a 3-volume set, and he goes after all of the bad people, bad groups, and bad ideas.

A Theodicy of Hell
  • Author : C. Seymour
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release Date : 2013-03-09
  • Category: Philosophy
  • Pages : 210
  • ISBN Code: 9401706042

Summary: In A Theodicy of Hell Charles Seymour tackles one of the most difficult problems facing the western theistic tradition: to show the consonance between eternal punishment and the goodness of God. Medieval theology attempted to resolve the dilemma by arguing that any sin, no matter how slight, merits unending torment. Contemporary thinkers, on the other hand, tend to eliminate the retributive element from hell entirely. Combining historical breadth with detailed argumentation, the author develops a novel understanding of hell which avoids the extremes of both its traditional and modern rivals. He then surveys the battery of objections ranged against the possibility of eternal punishment and shows how his `freedom view of hell' can withstand the attack. The work will be of particular importance for those interested in philosophy of religion and theology, including academics, students, seminarians, clergy, and anyone else with a personal desire to come to terms with this perennially challenging doctrine.

The Right Way to Do Wrong
  • Author : Harry Houdini
  • Publisher : Cosimo, Inc.
  • Release Date : 2007-03-01
  • Category: Social Science
  • Pages : 104
  • ISBN Code: 1602060789

Summary: The legendary Harry Houdini started the tradition of magicians debunking charlatans and revealing secrets of the trade that continues today through the likes Penn and Teller or James "The Amazing" Randi. But Houdini went even further here, in this delightful 1906 novelty: he revealed the working secrets of thieves, swindlers, and con artists. Culled from his conversations with "the chiefs of police and the most famous detectives in the world," Houdini's tales of the tricks of the trade of beggars, pickpockets, and burglars are instructive and amusing. The master showman was also a surprisingly entertaining writer-and this is one of his most enjoyable books, one that will enthrall readers of true crime as well as fans of Houdini himself. Hungarian-American magician and professional skeptic EHRICH WEISS (1874-1926)-aka Harry Houdini, "Handcuff King and Jail Breaker"-also wrote Magical Rope Ties and Escapes (1920) and A Magician Among the Spirits (1924).
