Summary: Lane Akins is living her life as just another government-funded physicist when the space station she works on comes under attack by the Apkallu, a shape-shifting alien species, and Lane becomes the single hostage in a high-tension intergalactic conflict. The head Apkallu diplomat, Akari, takes custody of Lane and the two slowly discover more than mutual respect for one another. Akari reveals to Lane the existence of an underground group of Human terrorists who have secretly been building weapons aboard her station, citing this as the reason for the Apkallu attack. When the Human government panders to the terrorists and negotiations reach a breaking point, full-out war appears inevitable. In a last-ditch effort to protect Lane from being turned over to the terrorists, Akari telepathically bonds with Lane. Lane is appalled that Akari would force her to give up her Human citizenship and her independence, but Akari quickly teaches her the advantages of a telepathic partnership. Will they learn to work together and sort out their complicated feelings for each other before the galaxy is plunged into World War III?

Summary: Vladimir Fedorovich Dzhunkovsky was a witness to Russia’s unfolding tragedy—from Tsar Alexander II’s Great Reforms, through world war, revolution, the rise of a new regime, and finally, his country’s descent into terror under Stalin. But Dzhunkovsky was not just a passive observer—he was an active participant in his troubled and turbulent times, often struggling against the tide. In the centennial of the Russian revolution, his story takes on special significance. Highly readable, Overtaken by the Night captivates on many levels. It is a gripping biography of a man of many faces, a behind-the-curtain look at the inner workings of Russian politics at its highest levels, and also an engrossing account of ordinary Russians engulfed by swiftly moving political and social currents. Dzhunkovsky served as a confidant in the tsar’s imperial court and as governor in Moscow province during and after the 1905 revolution. In 1913 he became the empire’s security chief, determined to reform the practices of the dreaded tsarist political police, the Okhrana. Dismissed from office for daring to investigate and warn Tsar Nicholas about Rasputin, his path led him into combat on the battlefields of the First World War. A natural leader of men, he held his units together even as revolution spilled into the trenches. Arrested as a counterrevolutionary in 1918 and imprisoned until 1921, Dzhunkovsky avoided execution thanks to an outpouring of public support and his reputation for treating revolutionaries with fairness and dignity. Although later he consulted for the Stalinist secret police, he was tried and executed in 1938 as an enemy of the people. Based on Dzhunkovsky’s detailed memoirs and extensive archival research, Overtaken by the Night paints a fascinating picture of an important figure. Dzhunkovsky's incredible life reveals much about a long and crucial period in Russian history. It is a story of Russia in revolution reminiscent of the fictional Doctor Zhivago, but perhaps even more extraordinary for being true.

Summary: Classic Books Library presents this brand new edition of "The Call of the Wild" (1903), a short novel written by Jack London. Jack London (1876-1916), born John Griffith Chaney, was an American writer, social activist and journalist. As a young man he joined the Klondike Gold Rush migration in Canada between 1896 and 1899, a formative period that would influence his writing themes. Along with the novel “White Fang” (1906), the central character in “The Call of the Wild” is a dog. It is a story of Buck’s survival, heroism, communality and rebirth, and uses symbolism and anthropomorphism to convey human themes. The book’s appraisal of nature is considered as exemplary of an enduring trait in American literature, as well as a critique of industrialisation. London was also part of “The Crowd” in San Francisco, a literary group known for its radical interests in socialism and workers’ rights.

Summary: The idea of technological singularity, and what it would mean if ordinary human intelligence were enhanced or overtaken by artificial intelligence. The idea that human history is approaching a “singularity”—that ordinary humans will someday be overtaken by artificially intelligent machines or cognitively enhanced biological intelligence, or both—has moved from the realm of science fiction to serious debate. Some singularity theorists predict that if the field of artificial intelligence (AI) continues to develop at its current dizzying rate, the singularity could come about in the middle of the present century. Murray Shanahan offers an introduction to the idea of the singularity and considers the ramifications of such a potentially seismic event. Shanahan's aim is not to make predictions but rather to investigate a range of scenarios. Whether we believe that singularity is near or far, likely or impossible, apocalypse or utopia, the very idea raises crucial philosophical and pragmatic questions, forcing us to think seriously about what we want as a species. Shanahan describes technological advances in AI, both biologically inspired and engineered from scratch. Once human-level AI—theoretically possible, but difficult to accomplish—has been achieved, he explains, the transition to superintelligent AI could be very rapid. Shanahan considers what the existence of superintelligent machines could mean for such matters as personhood, responsibility, rights, and identity. Some superhuman AI agents might be created to benefit humankind; some might go rogue. (Is Siri the template, or HAL?) The singularity presents both an existential threat to humanity and an existential opportunity for humanity to transcend its limitations. Shanahan makes it clear that we need to imagine both possibilities if we want to bring about the better outcome.

Summary: The Pulpit Commentary was first published between 1880 and 1919 and is a highly respected work written by conservative, trustworthy men. Containing over 22,000 pages and 95,000 entries, it is one of the largest and best-selling homiletic commentary sets of all time. It was directed by editors Joseph Exell and Henry Donald Maurice Spence-Jones and utilized more than 100 authors over a 30-year span. When reading this commentary, it is not difficult to see why it has remained a favorite amongst pastors for more than 100 years. There are three key elements which set this apart from its contemporaries, the first being that it gives an exposition, or verse-by-verse, annotation of each verse in the Bible. The second element is that it explores the framework of the text, the homiletics. Finally, it supplies the homilies with multiple model sermons from various authors. Also included is a translation as well as historical and geographical information. The Evangelical Magazine and Missionary Chronicle declared, “This commentary bids fair to take a conspicuous place among the ever-multiplying aids to the study of the Holy Scriptures. It will revive the great work of Lange, and will far exceed the Speaker's Commentary in the bulk and fullness of its material. The peculiarity of the Pulpit Commentary is that it offers special assistance to the preacher: first by giving him a critical and exegetical exposition of the text of Scripture, and then providing him with succinct and helpful directions as to the preachable aspects of the chapter and paragraph already explained." The print edition of this set typically retails for more than $1,000 making the current offered price a very good bargain. Due to its size, it has been broken up into nine separate volumes: Volume 1 Genesis to Joshua Volume 2 Judges to 2 Kings Volume 3 1 Chronicles to Job Volume 4 Psalms to Song of Songs Volume 5 Isaiah to Daniel Volume 6 Hosea to Malachi Volume 7 Matthew to John Volume 8 Act to Philippians Volume 9 Colossians to Revelation The footnotes have been placed in line with the text with each footnote number enclosed in red brackets (i.e.: []) and the text in green. There is also a linked table of contents at the beginning of each volume for ease of navigation. Key Features * Over 22,000 pages with more than 95,000 entries * One of the largest and exhaustive commentary sets of its kind * Contributions from over 100 authors * Expositions—with thorough verse-by-verse commentary of each verse of the Bible * Homiletics—with the framework or overall look of the text * Homilies—four to six sample sermons from various authors * Detailed information on Biblical customs * Historical and geographical information * Translations of key Hebrew and Greek words All 23 Volumes of the printed version are included in these nine volumes. 1. Summary: ST. CHRYSOSTOM’S Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians is continuous, according to chapter and verse; instead of being arranged in Homilies with a Moral or Practical application at their close, as in his exposition of other Epistles. It was written at Antioch, as Montfaucon infers from a reference which the Author makes, upon ch. i. v. 16. (p. 20,) to other of his writings, which certainly were written about the same time in that city. vid. Hom. de Mutat. Nom. tom. iii. p. 98. ed. Ben.
