Summary: The classical Greek myth of Demeter and her daughter Persephone as told in Homer's Hymn to Demeter has been used most often to explain the cycle of the seasons. However, a closer examination will reveal insights on living and dying, loss and reconciliation, and suffering and healing. This work demostrates the continued importance and relevance of the myth of Demeter and Persephone to today's society. The first three chapters provide a summary of the Homeric story and examine the myth from the perspectives of the mother and daughter. The following chapters discuss the symbolism of critical objects, the role of female mentoring, the role of Hades and the meaning of the underworld, the subject of rape, and the masculinist perspective presented by Zeus and Helios, and derive lessons useful for healing and knowledge. The Hymn to Demeter as translated by Helene Foley is included as an appendix in order to provide a basis for the discussion in the text. Notes and a bibliography also follow the text.

Sexual Pollution in the Hebrew Bible
  • Author : Eve Levavi Feinstein
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release Date : 2014
  • Category: Religion
  • Pages : 293
  • ISBN Code: 0199395543

Summary: "The concepts of purity and pollution are fundamental to the worldview reflected in the Hebrew Bible yet the ways that biblical texts apply these concepts to sexual relationships remain largely overlooked. Sexual Pollution in the Hebrew Bible argues that the concept of pollution is rooted in disgust and that pollution language applied to sexual relations expresses a sense of bodily contamination resulting from revulsion. Most texts in the Hebrew Bible that use pollution language in sexual contexts reflect a conception of women as sexual property susceptible to being "ruined" for particular men through contamination by others. In contrast, the Holiness legislation of the Pentateuch applies pollution language to men who engage in transgressive sexual relations, conveying the idea that male bodily purity is a prerequisite for individual and communal holiness.Sexual transgressions contaminate the male body and ultimately result in exile when the land vomits out its inhabitants. The Holiness legislation's conception of sexual pollution, which is found in Leviticus 18, had a profound impact on later texts. In the book of Ezekiel, it contributes to a broader conception of pollution resulting from Israel's sins, which led to the Babylonian exile. In the book of Ezra, it figures in a view of the Israelite community as a body of males contaminated by foreign women. Yet the idea of female pollution rooted in a view of women as sexual property persisted alongside the idea of male pollution as an impediment to holiness. Eva Feinstein illuminates why the idea of pollution adheres to particular domains of experience, including sex, death, and certain types of infirmity. Sexual Pollution in the Hebrew Bible allows for a more thorough understanding of sexual pollution, its particular characteristics, and the role that it plays in biblical literature"--

Daddies Don't Cry
  • Author : Lionel Scott
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release Date : 2012-03-01
  • Category: Poetry
  • Pages : 124
  • ISBN Code: 1468540106

Summary: This is a writing for men, those who value the influence of a father on the character development of his children and teens who choose to runaway. The poetry is the result of a daughter running away from home. National statistics show that as many as 70 % of current and former inmates sited a broken or nonexistent relationship with their father as the major negative aspect of their lives. The author travels a gamut of emotions in an effort to recapture and redefine himself as a father and man. In the writings it is obvious that he feels separated from himself. Anyone who loses a child can relate to such a feeling. He speaks and also listens to the daughter. He believes if he becomes the cosmopolitan parent he will gain her. His emotions jog the distance from anger to sadness to hate to self-blame to temporary insanity. The book is organized in six musical sessions. In the first the daughter speaks in an authentic voice of adolescence. The father then responds with tender words that he believes will remind her of the value their friendship. Afterwards, the father and mother express their deepest fears as they relate nightly their concern for the daughter. Session four sounds like a series of songs of hat. Fortunately the father, who sings lead, completes the performance quickly. Session five finds the father not as agitated. He sings tunes that he hopes his daughter will listen to one day. The final session may be the best writing of the sessions. The father leaps through several genres of musical style in a last effort to reach his daughter. Individually these are mere contemporary lyrics. Collectively they are more because they offer a fresh, unique and believable expression of emotions. Any musically-centered person i.e. musician, performer would do well visit this concert.

Summary: The new forensic thriller from the international bestselling author of Taboo and Torn. A Fallen Angel. A Devil on the Loose. When a young girl is discovered dead on an isolated Irish country road, it seems at first glance to be a simple hit and run. Then the cops see the tattoo on her back - a pair of beautifully wrought angel wings that lend the victim a sense of ethereal innocence. Forensic investigator Reilly Steel is soon on the scene and her highly tuned sixth sense tells her there is more to this case than a straightforward murder. But with almost zero evidence and no way to trace the girl's origin, Reilly and the police are at a loss. Then the angel tattoo is traced to other children - both dead and alive - who are similarly marked, and Reilly starts to suspect they have all been abducted by the same person. But why? And will Reilly get to the bottom of the mystery and uncover what links these children together before tragedy strikes again?
