Twin Cyborgs Book by Terry D. Oberley

Summary: One purpose of this memoir is to describe to my sons Matthew and Alexander, granddaughters Sophia and Juliet, and any future grandchildren the driving forces that determined my destiny. I have often toyed with the idea of writing my memoir, but the writing would never have happened if not for the deaths of my father, Jim, in 2002; mother, Ruby, in 2006; beloved twin brother, Larry, in 2008; and treasured wife, Edith, in 2009. I realized that the memories of these special people would be lost forever if I did not commit them to paper as soon as possible. Our lives are finite, and our accomplishments seem ephemeral. Thus, in comparison to the seemingly ageless universe, the details of our lives appear to be mere vanity.

Summary: The title is just the beginning. This is a comically satirical story of a group of Scorpio boys and men, ages sixteen to thirty. These men for various; emotional, sexual and romantic problems are taking the anti-depressant Prozac or 'zac' as they call it. Our main character Josh Eversmen has just turned thirty. His wife a LAPD officer, has left him. He has just lost the job he loved more than life-its-self, to his boss's lesbian lover. And he has moved back home into his childhood bedroom which is now his mother's sewing room. His mother, who is concerned about his depression and mood swings gives him as a birthday present an appointment to see a therapist. The story follows Josh in one-side of the Prozac-world and out the other. While the door is open Josh makes new friends and meets an old friend among the men in a 'group' he joins. One member of the 'group', who is a successful male model has the eating disorder "activity anorexia", one member has Tourette Syndrome, another has a "underwear fetish", one is an "obsessive compulsive" and other members suffer from the "craziness of apparently normal people". By the luck of the draw they are all Scorpios and when they are not stinging each other, or any and everyone they meet... they're stinging themselves. 'Scorpio Men On Prozac' for the most part is howls of laughs, sexy with a grin or a smirk, sometimes dark, but never dull.

Mae West Book by Jill Watts

Mae West Book
  • Author : Jill Watts
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release Date : 2003-04-17
  • Category: Biography & Autobiography
  • Pages : 400
  • ISBN Code: 0195347676

Summary: "Why don't you come up and see me sometime?" Mae West invited and promptly captured the imagination of generations. Even today, years after her death, the actress and author is still regarded as the pop archetype of sexual wantonness and ribald humor. But who was this saucy starlet, a woman who was controversial enough to be jailed, pursued by film censors and banned from the airwaves for the revolutionary content of her work, and yet would ascend to the status of film legend? Sifting through previously untapped sources, author Jill Watts unravels the enigmatic life of Mae West, tracing her early years spent in the Brooklyn subculture of boxers and underworld figures, and follows her journey through burlesque, vaudeville, Broadway and, finally, Hollywood, where she quickly became one of the big screen's most popular--and colorful--stars. Exploring West's penchant for contradiction and her carefully perpetuated paradoxes, Watts convincingly argues that Mae West borrowed heavily from African American culture, music, dance and humor, creating a subversive voice for herself by which she artfully challenged society and its assumptions regarding race, class and gender. Viewing West as a trickster, Watts demonstrates that by appropriating for her character the black tradition of double-speak and "signifying," West also may have hinted at her own African-American ancestry and the phenomenon of a black woman passing for white. This absolutely fascinating study is the first comprehensive, interpretive account of Mae West's life and work. It reveals a beloved icon as a radically subversive artist consciously creating her own complex image.
