Summary: The Wolves of Trapper's Bluff is a story of desires, sacrifices, persistency and challenges intertwined within the disharmonized tonalities of life. Moments of desperation conflict with episodes of triumph. Heart-melting emotional outpours succumb under the cold steeliness of grief. Fear-the constant sojourner-permeates throughout and love as a sublime universal bond underpins all the hopes. A soul warming "aha" triumphs at the end-as a testimony to an unbridled courage in faith.

Summary: The subtitle says it all: "A Collection of Interesting Scenes and Events in the Rocky Mountains Together With a Short Description of California: Also, Some Account of the Fur Trade, Especially as Carried on About the Sources of the MIssouri, Yellow Stone, and on the Waters of the Columbia, in the Rocky Mountains."First published in 1850 (original editions are almost impossible to find), this may well be fiction: its authenticity as journalism is hotly disputed. Written by the mysterious DAVID COYNER, about whom little is known except that he also authored an 1870 work entitled Cheap, Healthy and Happy Homes in West Virginia for Northern and New England Emigrants, this purports to be the account of an expedition headed by a Captain Williams gleaned from "an old musty, mutilated journal."Whether it's true or not, though, this is a grand adventure story of the American frontier of the mid 19th century.

Summary: A personal and historical exploration of the Bears Ears country and the fight to save a national monument. The Bears Ears National Monument in southeastern Utah, created by President Obama in 2016 and eviscerated by the Trump administration in 2017, contains more archaeological sites than any other region in the United States. It’s also a spectacularly beautiful landscape, a mosaic of sandstone canyons and bold mesas and buttes. This wilderness, now threatened by oil and gas drilling, unrestricted grazing, and invasion by Jeep and ATV, is at the center of the greatest environmental battle in America since the damming of the Colorado River to create Lake Powell in the 1950s. In The Bears Ears, acclaimed adventure writer David Roberts takes readers on a tour of his favorite place on earth as he unfolds the rich and contradictory human history of the 1.35 million acres of the Bears Ears domain. Weaving personal memoir with archival research, Roberts sings the praises of the outback he’s explored for the last twenty-five years.

Summary: In the style of Barry Lopez, Annie Dillard, and Eula Biss, Surrender explores the changing landscape of the American West and the radical environmental movements that have taken root in response to the increasingly urgent climate crisis. Blending personal memoir with insightful reportage and vivid nature writing, award-winning author and essayist Joanna Pocock investigates the changing landscape of the West and the radical environmental movements that have taken root in the Mountain States. She witnesses the annual tribal bison hunt near Yellowstone National Park, where she meets a scavenger community honing ancestral skills. She joins Finisia Medrano, a transgender rewilder who for many years has been living on the “hoop,” following her food source by seasonal migration. She attends the Ecosex Convergence — an annual gathering of people who place their relationship with the earth above everything else — and attends a workshop led by Reverend Teri Ciacchi, a sexologist, priestess of Aphrodite, and holistic spiritual healer in the Living Love Revolution Church. Surrender is a keen and compelling examination of the outsider eco-cultures blossoming in the new American West in an era of increasing climatic disruption, rising sea levels, animal extinctions, melting glaciers, and catastrophic wildfires.

Summary: This is the true story of my great-great grandfather, Calvin Potter who ran away from home at the age of 12 from Beaver, Pennsylvania. He made it as far as the Minnesota area where he was found near death by a Sisseton Sioux hunting party. They took great pains nursing him back to health and he chose to stay with them. As a young man he was asked by his Sioux father to go back to the whites and speak for his people. An Indian uprising in 1862 stopped all normal Indian life in the state of Minnesota. All Indians were taken from the state to reservations in other places. Some chose to escape to Canada and 38 were hung for their part in the war. Devastated, Calvin moves on with his life, marries and has five children, but he never was far from his past. This is historical fiction because I do not know the everyday life of his story, only the over-all facts.

Summary: Finding Emma is a fantastic story of adventure and love intertwined with the true historical events of the 1860s American West and the clash of white and Native American cultures. The fictional couple, Bob and Emma, like thousands of emigrants, is thrust into this sometimes violent period, where their strength of character, their hope, and their love for each other get tested by the transforming events brought on by the civil war and the clash of white and Native cultures on the Great Plains. While many of the historical events of this period have been recorded, the lives and stories of many thousands of Native Americans, mountain men, traders, freighters, emigrants, farmers, and soldiers have been lost to history. This book invites you to follow the trials and tribulations of our fictional couple as they travel on the Santa Fe Trail to the emerging trading markets of the Southwest, only to be derailed by renegade Comanche and Sioux who attack their wagon train and change their lives forever. The story is set against the actual historical events and places of the period and will keep you spellbound until the dramatic and violent conclusion of Bob and Emma’s odyssey.

Summary: This critical edition explores the past and future of wolves in Colorado. Originally published in 1929, The Last Stand of the Pack is a historical account of the extermination of what were then believed to be the last wolves in Colorado. Arthur H. Carhart and Stanley P. Young describe the wolves’ extermination and extoll the bravery of the federal trappers hunting them down while simultaneously characterizing the wolves as cunning individuals and noble adversaries to the growth of the livestock industry and the settlement of the West. This is nature writing at its best, even if the worldview expressed is at times jarring to the twenty-first-century reader. Now, almost 100 years later, much has been learned about ecology and the role of top-tier predators within ecosystems. In this new edition, Carhart and Young’s original text is accompanied by an extensive introduction with biographical details on Arthur Carhart and an overview of the history of wolf eradication in the west; chapters by prominent wildlife biologists, environmentalists, wolf reintroduction activists, and ranchers Tom Compton, Bonnie Brown, Mike Phillips, Norman A. Bishop, and Cheney Gardner; and an epilogue considering current issues surrounding the reintroduction of wolves in Colorado. Presenting a balanced perspective, these additional chapters address views both in support of and opposed to wolf reintroduction. Coloradans are deeply interested in wilderness and the debate surrounding wolf reintroduction, but for wolves to have a future in Colorado we must first understand the past. The Last Stand of the Pack: Critical Edition presents both important historical scholarship and contemporary ecological ideas, offering a complete picture of the impact of wolves in Colorado.

Summary: Robidoux Chronicles treats with comprehensive documentary detail the factual history of the Robidoux lineage in North America from the first progenitor who arrived in Quebec in about 1665, through the famous six brothers who distinguished themselves as Mountain Men, up until even recent times on reservations in the US. Many members of the Robidoux family were intimately connected to the entire history of the North American fur trade. The six brothers, born in St. Louis before the coming of Lewis & Clark, were important fur-traders during the classical Rendezvous era of the North American fur trade. They became key players in the organization & articulation of the Overland Trail, only to die soon afterward in relative obscurity upon the plains of Kansas & Nebraska. By the 1950's, the story of the Robidoux had been almost entirely forgotten. Subsequent historians had lost all but a scant & fragmentary knowledge of the true role & exploits of the Robidoux & their French-Indian compatriots upon the frontiers of the old west. Antoine Robidoux was the first to establish permanent trading settlements west of the Rockies in the Inter-Montane corridor, & his brother Michel was one of the first expeditions to traverse the length of the Grand Canyon. The eldest brother Joseph became one of the earliest established traders on the upper Missouri & founded St. Joseph, Missouri, which was later to be the primary starting point of the Overland Trail. His younger brother Louis became one of the earliest ranch owners in California, becoming Don of the Jurupa, that encompassed the areas known today as Riverside, San Bernardino, San Jacinto & San Timoteo. An entire inter-tribal French-Indian ethnocultural orientation had developed upon the plains, prairies & mountains of the Trans-Mississippi west a good fifty years before the coming of the Iron Horse & the Pony Express, & has been carried on today in proximity to the reservations of Kansas & Oklahoma, South Dakota & Wyoming.

Summary: During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. At the time of the publication of the WPA Guide to Arizona in 1940, the Grand Canyon State was the newest addition to the union. The guide presents a state of contrasts, both geographically and culturally. The photographs show many facets of the state—from the mesas and desert lands to the Spanish missions and Native American art.

Summary: “Jans is an exceptional storyteller—no nature writer can top him in terms of sheer emotional force.” —New York Times A Wolf Called Romeo is the true story of the exceptional black wolf who spent seven years interacting with the people and dogs of Juneau, Alaska, living on the edges of their community, engaging in an improbable, awe-inspiring interspecies dance, and bringing the wild into sharp focus.
