Summary: "Submerged is romantic suspense that will keep you up at night!"--Bestselling Author Dee Henderson A sabotaged plane. Two dead deep-water divers. Yancey, Alaska was a quiet town...until the truth of what was hidden in the depths off the coast began to appear. Bailey Craig vowed never to set foot in Yancey again. She has a past, and a reputation--and Yancey's a small town. She's returned to bury a loved one killed in the plane crash and is determined not to stay even an hour more than necessary. But then dark evidence emerges and Bailey's own expertise becomes invaluable for the case. Cole McKenna can handle the deep-sea dives and helping the police recover evidence. He can even handle the fact that a murderer has settled in his town and doesn't appear to be moving on. But dealing with the reality of Bailey's reappearance is a tougher challenge. Summary: Submerged soils and the wetlands they support are of huge practical importance: in global element cycles, as centres of biodiversity, in global food production. They are also uniquely interesting scientifically because of their peculiar biogeochemistry and the adaptations of plants and microbes to it. This book describes the physical, chemical and biological processes operating in submerged soils and governing their properties. It describes the transport processes controlling the fluxes of gases and solutes through the soil; the interchange of solutes between solid, liquid and gas phases; reduction and oxidation processes; biological processes in the soil and overlying water; and processes in the roots and rhizospheres of wetland plants. The dynamics of nutrients, toxins, pollutants and trace gases are then discussed in terms of these processes and in relation to wetland productivity and global element cycles. Written by a renowned expert in the field, this work will be invaluable to earth, environmental and agricultural scientists concerned with natural or man-made wetlands, and to advanced undergraduate and graduate studen ts of these topics.

Summary: “Keep your government hands off my Medicare!” Such comments spotlight a central question animating Suzanne Mettler’s provocative and timely book: why are many Americans unaware of government social benefits and so hostile to them in principle, even though they receive them? The Obama administration has been roundly criticized for its inability to convey how much it has accomplished for ordinary citizens. Mettler argues that this difficulty is not merely a failure of communication; rather it is endemic to the formidable presence of the “submerged state.” In recent decades, federal policymakers have increasingly shunned the outright disbursing of benefits to individuals and families and favored instead less visible and more indirect incentives and subsidies, from tax breaks to payments for services to private companies. These submerged policies, Mettler shows, obscure the role of government and exaggerate that of the market. As a result, citizens are unaware not only of the benefits they receive, but of the massive advantages given to powerful interests, such as insurance companies and the financial industry. Neither do they realize that the policies of the submerged state shower their largest benefits on the most affluent Americans, exacerbating inequality. Mettler analyzes three Obama reforms—student aid, tax relief, and health care—to reveal the submerged state and its consequences, demonstrating how structurally difficult it is to enact policy reforms and even to obtain public recognition for achieving them. She concludes with recommendations for reform to help make hidden policies more visible and governance more comprehensible to all Americans. The sad truth is that many American citizens do not know how major social programs work—or even whether they benefit from them. Suzanne Mettler’s important new book will bring government policies back to the surface and encourage citizens to reclaim their voice in the political process.

Summary: Between 1941 and 1945, thousands of German Jews, in fear for their lives, made the choice to flee their impending deportations and live submerged in the shadows of the Nazi capital. Drawing on a wealth of archival evidence and interviews with survivors, this book reconstructs the daily lives of Jews who stayed in Berlin during the war years. Contrary to the received wisdom that “hidden” Jews stayed in attics and cellars and had minimal contact with the outside world, the author reveals a cohort of remarkable individuals who were constantly on the move and actively fought to ensure their own survival.

Summary: Quaternary Paleoenvironments examines the drowned landscapes exposed as extensive and attractive territory for prehistoric human settlement during the Ice Ages of the Pleistocene, when sea levels dropped to 120m-135m below their current levels. This volume provides an overview of the geological, geomorphological, climatic and sea-level history of the European continental shelf as a whole, as well as a series of detailed regional reviews for each of the major sea basins. The nature and variable attractions of the landscapes and resources available for human exploitation are examined, as are the conditions under which archaeological sites and landscape features are likely to have been preserved, destroyed or buried by sediment during sea-level rise. The authors also discuss the extent to which we can predict where to look for drowned landscapes with the greatest chance of success, with frequent reference to examples of preserved prehistoric sites in different submerged environments. Quaternary Paleoenvironments will be of interest to archaeologists, geologists, marine scientists, palaeoanthropologists, cultural heritage managers, geographers, and all those with an interest in the drowned landscapes of the continental shelf.

Summary: In the face of the enormous destruction caused by the December 26, 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami event, it is necessary to utilize more effective means of tsunami mitigation to prevent such tragedies. Based on the experiences gathered in storm wave damping by using submerged structures, Agnieszka Strusinska examines the applicability of artificial reefs as an integrated part of a multi-defence line strategy for tsunami attenuation. In her study, she first discusses the results of laboratory experiments in order to identify the difference in the nonlinear interaction of storm and tsunami-like solitary waves with an impermeable sub¬mer¬ged structure of a finite width (including generation of wave breaking and wave fission). With this basic knowledge, the damping performance of an artificial reef under tsunami impact is determined as a ratio of wave transmission, wave reflection, and wave energy dissipation for varying reef geometries and incident wave conditions using a Boussinesq-type numerical model.

Summary: The interaction of acoustic fields with submerged elastic structures, both by propagation and scattering, is being investigated at various institutions and laboratories world-wide with ever-increasing sophistication of experiments and analysis. This book offers a collection of contributions from these research centers that represent the present state-of-the-art in the study of acoustic elastic interaction, being on the cutting edge of these investigations. This includes the description of acoustic scattering from submerged elastic objects and shells by the Resonance Scattering Theory of Flax, Dragonette and Überall, and the interaction of these phenomena in terms of interface waves. It also includes the use of this theory for the purpose of inverse scattering, i.e. the determination of the scattered objects properties from the received acoustic backscattered signals. The problem of acoustically excited waves in inhomogeneous and anisotropic materials, and of inhomogeneous propagating waves is considered. Vibrations and resonances of elastic shells, including shells with various kinds of internal attachments, are analyzed. Acoustic scattering experiments are described in the time domain, and on the basis of the Wigner–Ville distribution. Acoustic propagation in the water column over elastic boundaries is studied experimentally both in laboratory tanks, and in the field, and is analyzed theoretically. Ultrasonic nondestructive testing, including such aspects like probe modelling, scattering by various types of cracks, receiving probes and calibration by a side-drilled hole is also studied in details. A comprehensive picture of these complex phenomena and other aspects is presented in the book by researchers that are experts in each of these domains, giving up-to-date accounts of the field in all these aspects. Summary: Lipase is an extracellular enzyme in food industry and is produced by different microbial and fungal sources by submerged and solid state fermentation process. In the present study, Bacillus subtilis was employed for the production of lipase in peptone broth with olive oil as inducer. Maximum lipase production was observed at 96 hours of incubation and NH4Cl (40.75 U/ml) as salt and peptone (24U/ml) as nitrogen source and olive oil (24 U/ml) as inducer. The results of the present study demonstrate that Bacillus subtilis is ideal for extracellular production at industrial level.
