Two of the recommendations of that Conference are, as I have shown, in process of realisation, and the third and greatest will, I hope and believe, be soon in the same position. White Women in Fiji, 1835–1930
  • Author : Claudia Knapman
  • Publisher : University of Queensland Press
  • Release Date : 2014-06-01
  • Category: History
  • Pages : 240
  • ISBN Code: 1921902388

Summary: First published in 1986, White Women in Fiji 1835–1930: The Ruin of Empire? challenges assumptions and assertions about the role of European women in multiracial colonial societies. Author Claudia Knapman uses a combination of interviews, newspaper, and other sources to picture the lives of European women in Fiji between the 1830s and 1930s. She offers a new and challenging interpretation of the nature and interrelationship between racism and sexism in colonial societies. As Knapman points out, gender has been used to argue that racial disharmony came with the presence of foreign women. White women in Fiji's colonial society were stereotyped as discordant forces in the domestic sphere whereas Knapman shows that their domestic work was crucial to the maintenance of white society and that women were no different from men in contact situations and rather than an antagonistic element, they were crucial to establishing interracial relations.

Malay Society in the Late Nineteenth Century
  • Author : J. M. Gullick
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release Date : 1987
  • Category: Religion
  • Pages : 417
  • ISBN Code: N.A

Summary: Beginning in the mid-19th century, the forces of social change in Malay gradually gathered momentum and eventually permeated all of Malay society--even reaching those states that still retained their independence. Piecing together contemporary evidence found in official records and in personal reminiscences of Malays and Europeans, this study of Malay social history concerns itself with the position of rulers, the aristocratic class, and the peasant class, and presents a picture of a society grasping for stability in its Islamic faith and its traditions while adapting to a different world.
