First and foremost, it is a book about the history of Fionn’s family, as narrated by his mother, whose motto is “Tell (almost) every truth.” While it’s a story about two particular families coming together as one, it also explores the nature of family generally, the imperfections, jealousies, and secrets that lie side by side with its loyalties, unconditional love, and frankness. Family are the friends you can’t avoid. Erin’s advice to her son on living with family is somewhat longer and more positive than Lord Chesterfield’s 18th Century advice to a young man contemplating marriage: “Don’t.”

Summary: In scenes eerily parallel to the culture of fear inspired by our current War on Terror, A Need to Know explores the clandestine history of a CIA family defined, and ultimately destroyed, by their oath to keep toxic secrets during the Cold War. When Bud Goodall’s father mysteriously died, his inheritance consisted of three well-worn books: a Holy Bible, The Great Gatsby, and a diary. But they turned his life upside down. From the diary Goodall learned that his father had been a CIA operative during the height of the Cold War, and the Bible and Gatsby had been his codebooks. Many unexplained facets of Bud’s childhood came into focus with this revelation. The high living in Rome and London. The blood-stained stiletto in his jewelry case. Bud, as a child, was always told he never had “a need to know.” Or did he? Now, as an adult and a university professor, Goodall attempts to fill in the missing pieces of his Cold War childhood by uncovering a lifetime of family secrets. Who were his parents? What did his father do on those business trips when he was “working for the government?” What betrayal turned a heroic career of national service into a nightmare of alcoholism, depression, and premature death for both of his parents? Slowly, inexorably, Goodall unearths the chilling secrets of a CIA family in A Need to Know. 2006 Best Book Award, National Communication Association Ethnography Division

Summary: Stroke. More than 500,000 Americans will suffer its silent attack this year. The number has epidemic proportions, but add to it the newly estimated 11 million victims each year whose strokes go undetected and America shakes its collective head and wonders, am I next? One third of those detected will die in a short period of time, over 160,000 fatalities, making stroke the number three killer in the US behind only heart disease and cancer. It leaves another 200,000 victims with permanent disability. In spite of the numbers, brain attack strikes intimately and personally. Its shadow of death spreads quickly over living tissue in the brain, violating personality and disrupting life. This graphic contrast, huge numbers of victims versus the unique intimacy of each stroke, draws into focus the one common by-product of all attacks, fear - fear of the unknown, fear of death or livelihood lost. The perception is evil incarnate, destroying the sanctity of one's life and home. I know, stroke left me blinded, with short-term memory wiped clean and sensory input distorted and disorienting. Only the divine touch could bring the light of hope into this darkness. The good news - much can be done to fan this hope into a fire of restoration. The better news - remarkable advancements available today include "miracle" clot busters, surgical procedures that listen to the differences in sounds made by healthy cells and dead ones, probes that travel through the body to apply medicines directly on affected areas of the brain,, and the vision for tomorrow that moves microscopic nanotechnology out of science fiction directly into the brain to both repair and replace damaged brain cells. Different Strokes... unwraps the fear of stroke, revealing possibilities for healing and hope - hope birthed by the insight of experience and supported by research collected from leading edge resources.

Need to Know Book by John G. Stackhouse Jr.

Need to Know Book
  • Author : John G. Stackhouse Jr.
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release Date : 2014-05-30
  • Category: Religion
  • Pages : 320
  • ISBN Code: 0199376972

Summary: How should a Christian think? If a serious Christian wants to think seriously about a serious subject--from considering how to vote in the next election to choosing a career; from deciding among scientific theories to selecting a mate; from weighing competing marketing proposals to discerning the best fitness plan--what does he or she do? This basic question is at the heart of a complex discourse: epistemology. A bold new statement of Christian epistemology, Need to Know presents a comprehensive, coherent, and clear model of responsible Christian thinking. Grounded in the best of the Christian theological tradition while being attentive to a surprising range of thinkers in the history of philosophy, natural science, social science, and culture, the book offers a scheme for drawing together experience, tradition, scholarship, art, and the Bible into a practical yet theoretically profound system of thinking about thinking. John Stackhouse's fundamental idea is as simple as it is startling: Since God calls human beings to do certain things in the world, God can be relied upon to supply the knowledge necessary for human beings to do those things. The classic Christian concept of vocation, then, supplies both the impetus and the assurance that faithful Christians can trust God to guide their thinking--on a "need to know" basis.

What Every Teacher Needs to Know about Psychology Book by David Didau

  • Publisher : John Catt Educational
  • Release Date : 2016-08-12
  • Category: Education
  • Pages : 280
  • ISBN Code: 1912906473

Summary: Much of what we do in classrooms is intuitive, steered by what 'feels right', but all too often intuition proves a poor, sometimes treacherous guide. Although what we know about the workings of the human brain is still pitifully little, the science of psychology can and has revealed certain surprising findings that teachers would do well to heed. Over the past few decades, psychological research has made real strides into understanding how we learn, but it's only in the last few years that education has become aware of these insights. Part of the problem is a tendency amongst teachers to resist being told 'what works' if it conflicts with intuition. Whilst we cannot and should not relinquish our professional judgement in the face of outlandish claims, we should at least be aware of what scientists have discovered about learning, thinking, motivation, behaviour and assessment over the past few decades. This though is far easier said than done. Every year thousands of research papers are published, some of which contradict each other. How can busy teachers know which research is worth investing time in reading and understanding? Here, David Didau and Nick Rose attempt to lay out the evidence and theoretical perspectives on what they believe are the most important and useful psychological principles of which teachers ought to be aware. That is not to say this book contains everything you might ever need to know - there is no way it could - it is merely a primer. We hope that you are inspired to read and explore some of the sources for yourself and see what other principles can find a home in your classroom. Some of what we present may be surprising, some dubious, but some in danger of being dismissed as 'blindingly obvious'. Before embracing or dismissing any of these principles we urge you to interrogate the evidence and think carefully about the advice we offer. While nothing works everywhere and everything might work somewhere, this is a guide to what we consider the best bets from the realm of psychology.

Through all their missions and adventures, the tightknit group of friends who make up the Sisterhood have learned one vital lesson: everybody has a weak spot. In the case of Yoko Wong’s dear friend Garland Lee, the multimillion-selling performer known as America’s beloved songbird, that weak spot was trusting her lawyer, Arthur Forrester. For years, he’s taken advantage of her faith in him to amass a secret fortune. And now, in the deepest betrayal yet, he’s dragged her into a lawsuit that could cost her everything. The Sisterhood know they can’t let that happen. Forrester has some of the country’s top judges in his pocket, and a list of influential and ruthless friends—not to mention knowledge of all the ways the law can be corrupted to work in his favor. But he doesn’t have the Vigilantes’ deep-seated loyalty and determination. And all his years of underhanded dealings won’t prepare him for the type of creative payback that the Sisters have made their specialty . . . Summary: Social work deals with the heavy end of human difficulties such as cruelty, self-destructiveness, and severe and enduring mental health problems. How do social workers make sense of the emotional difficulties which come with the realities of practice? Understanding our clients is the best way of dealing with complex situations and avoiding burnout and stress. The contributors to this book argue that psychoanalysis provides a theory of development and behaviour capable of formulating a realistic model for understanding emotional difficulties and disturbances in both clients and ourselves. The chapters demonstrate a way of thinking for the practitioner that can be used in all situations. The book examines in detail some of the difficult and disturbing conversations that social workers have with clients of all ages. It provides a psychoanalytic framework for understanding circumstances which may be puzzling, stressful or frightening, and a theory whose value for many social work problems is well underpinned by research evidence. Written by senior practitioners who are all still working in the front line, this book puts complex real life experiences into words, to help the social worker become a more effective practitioner.

Summary: Everything You Need to Know About Sex In Order to Get to Heaven A Synopsis The Title: The above title is an eye catching twist on a best selling book that was written by David Rubin in the seventies. Woody Allen went on to make a movie based on the title which took lots of liberties with the text. My book connects human sexuality with human spirituality. While that connection is nothing new in literature, the way it is done in this book is very refreshing, creative, and humorous. Theres a good deal of pop theology of the sort we havent seen much from the mainstream. The title brings a smile to the face, and a curiosity as to what might lie under the covers. The title will appeal to many inside and outside the church. To my amazement church people seem to like it at least in my congregations. Most of the folks I know are impatient with the media frenzy and the churchs skittishness about sexuality and orientation. Even more gratifying, I have found the book to be of interest to the LGBT crowd in several colleges in Southwestern West Virginia and among my children and their friends, all of whom are 20 Somethings. The Dedication: In a departure from customary book dedications, Ive written a short chapter for my immediate family. Two of my children are gay, the middle child is a rebellious poet. My wife counts these as her blessings. So do I. Thus I dedicate my book to each of them. I think it important to go on record at the outset that my love for my children is unconditional. Still I let the reader know that I have some ambivalence about homosexuality as the whole culture does. This is a story of how a Priest who was brought up by a gay uncle and then who became the father of two gay kids can make peace within himself. The pilgrimage to that peace is what this book is all about. The Introduction: As a reader, I like to know what Im getting into when I open up a book. I try to give my readers some helpful handles to guide their way from chapter to chapter. I think that what I have produced here is a readable, interesting, and thought provoking treatment of a hot topic in the church and the culture. In point of fact my family and my church are a microcosm of what is tearing us apart as a nation. We are deeply divided over questions of personal morality while at the same time we look the other way when the weightier issues of justice that are staring us in the face. The introduction gives a good summary of what is to follow in the rest of the book. It is a well executed treatment of what confuses many people in the pews. Thus church people as well as the unchurched may very well be attracted to these pages since it makes sense of what confuses so many. Just a Simple Parish Priest: It makes sense to introduce myself to the reader. It seems especially appropriate to share the story of how I came to be a priest. The context of that call comes out of the experience of the loss of my dad at Christmas when I was a child. Tracing the events of that death, to a grandmothers love, to an experience of the reality of God, I invite the reader to consider how childhood becomes the parent to the adult; another familiar theme in literature. Still, as familiar as that theme is, it is a good hook to help the reader go on. What happens in this chapter is the use of the utterly ordinary to help the reader see God in the midst of the living and breathing of life itself. The question of heaven then arises and how to get my daddy there. Most of my readers find this some of my most compelling writing. All I Want to Do is Get my Family to Heaven: A father who frittered away his earnings and died godless for all we know, a mother with several divorces and an abortion, an uncle who is gay; how in the world do we get a crowd like that into hea
