Summary: December, 1985 Dear Father, Thank you, Father, for helping me through what has been both a challenge and a struggle. Writing by hand has been difficult for me and for those who have helped me translate my writing to book form. Because of problems with my speech, it has been hard to deal with the many details of editing and printing. Thank you also, Father, for allowing my employment to continue, for helping me to overcome the daily problems of working and living, and for allowing me to find some pleasures, too, even some girls and their love. Thank you for the many friends you have helped me make, in my church and in others, in high school, in college, at work—and for the help they have given me. And finally, thank you for my wonderful family, and for the strength you have given them in helping me survive. Mike Straight’s diary spans seven and one-half years. It is a story of early teens, triumphs in football, tragedy, and striving to become whole again after an automobile accident at age 16. While it was a tremendous blow to be denied his beloved sport of football, he fought his way upward to many accomplishments though confined, for the most part, to a wheelchair. Since his accident he has learned how to drive again, owned several cars, bought (and sold) his own home, gone to three colleges, and has held a manufacturing assembly job for the last several years. Now, in addition to his job, he lifts weights, exercises daily, and goes “dancing.” Mike has had, for him, great success (that most of us enjoy as normal). Yet love has eluded him; not having the true love of a woman returned to him has been his ongoing trial, as his diary will tell you. Only through a deep love for God, and a sometimes wavering and often challenged faith in Him, has Michael sustained his determination to be good, better, best. That he has been able to write and publish this book is a tremendous tribute to both his faith and his determination, as you will see.

An Autobiography of a Colonial Doctor
  • Author : Cecil Isola
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release Date : 2011-11-02
  • Category: Biography & Autobiography
  • Pages : 244
  • ISBN Code: 9781456784003

Summary: The book is an autobiography of the writer who from an early age was a prolific note keeper, a habit which enabled him to amass thousands of written pages of information which he incorporated into this text. In the storyline are to be found descriptions of incidents he witnessed during the period 1928-56. The book’s cover is a photograph of Gibraltar taken in 1890 from Campamento Spain and before Gibraltar’s harbour was built. It shows the fortification walls as the French and Spaniards would have seen them during the Great Siege (1789-83). The Irish Flag represents his wife’s birthplace and the Union Jack his. Most of the photographs in the book are from the family’s archives and were taken when photography was in its primitive and non-pixel stage. In his young life the writer, oblivious to the landings occurring in the nearby Port of Algeciras, missed the advancing army of General Franco by a few hours despite the fact that gunfire could be heard a few miles away. Four years later he was to cross a devastated Spain on his way to boarding school in England. On that occasion they were also unaware that Hitler’s armies were testing the Dutch defences before coming down in top gear. Their experiences in wartime Britain, the doodlebug, the North West blitz, his Stonyhurst College experience and the aftermath of peace are all recorded. The writer talks about the changes that took place in Gibraltar and his father’s election to the 1st legislative Council as the only candidate elected on the 1st count. The Queen’s visit to Gibraltar and their connections with the Maharaj of Jodhpur during the last days of Imperial Britain are also described. The book is one of the selected Alumni stories for the tercentenary celebrations of the School of Physics at Trinity College Dublin 2011.

Summary: Im mad as Hell, and Im not going to take it any more. So begins Satans autobiography, E-MAILS FROM THE UNDERWORLD: I AM NOT WHO I AM NOT. So long as God remained Out There,a transcendent, superhero who occasionally intervened in human affairs based on no apparent rhyme or reason, Satan was comfortable with the arrangement. God -- Out There. Satan in here. That's the way it was supposed to be. But with the publication of I AM WHO I AM: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF GOD, it's a whole new game. In his mind, Satan, a metaphorical symbol for all the inner demons that keep humankind imprisoned within, has no choice but to come out with his own story. God has laid down the gauntlet; now it is time to respond, he proclaims. Let the best (or worst) deity win. And Satan is a cocky cuss. When it comes to laying claim to an inner presence within, his confidence runneth over. As he himself puts it, Im your inner demons. Im Anger, Envy, Lust, Pride. Im Greed, Impatience, Sloth. Im Judgmentalism, Im Bigotry, Im Stereotyping, Im all the sneaky little -isms and -igotries that allow you humanoids to think youre better than somebody else. You all know Im deep down inside every one of you. The story of Satan is a story of erupting from within. But Satan isnt just going to tell his lifes story, hes going to show it to you. E-mail by e-mail. From tweaking the Beatitudes to the Bad Dude's Baditudes," to offering a new set of Ten Commandments to Hell, Satan takes you on a roller-coaster ride of your own inner demons. By books end, a conscientious reader will have picked up more than enough tricks of the trade to insure a speedy and successful trip to metaphorical Hell (not to mention, of course, the ways to avoid it). (E-MAILS FROM THE UNDERWORLD: I AM NOT WHO I AM NOT is the second of a three part series of autobiographies of God, Satan, and Jesus, respectively. Be sure to complete your own collection of the trilogy with copies of I AM WHO I AM: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF GOD, and I AM THE WORD: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF JESUS.)

Summary: Mary Delany (née Granville, 1700-88) is best known for her cut-paper illustrations of plants - she completed nearly 1,000 of these detailed botanical pictures. Widowed after an unhappy first marriage, she lived in London, attended court, and was a favourite of George III and Queen Charlotte. After being widowed for a second time, and at the age of 74, she began her plant illustrations: failing eyesight caused her to abandon the work in 1784. Delany knew many of the leading cultural figures of the eighteenth century, including Handel and Swift. An enthusiastic correspondent, she wrote and received hundreds of letters, which were edited by her great-great-niece, Lady Llanover (1802-96). Published in 1861-2, they tell the life story of this remarkable woman, while also providing a fascinating glimpse into the world of Georgian England. Volume 1 begins with an unfinished autobiography and continues with correspondence from 1717 to 1737.
