Draculas, Vampires, and Other Undead Forms
  • Author : John Edgar Browning,Caroline Joan "Kay" S. Picart
  • Publisher : Scarecrow Press
  • Release Date : 2009-04-08
  • Category: Literary Criticism
  • Pages : 338
  • ISBN Code: 0810869233

Summary: Since the publication of Dracula in 1897, Bram Stoker's original creation has been a source of inspiration for artists, writers, and filmmakers. From Universal's early black-and-white films and Hammer's Technicolor representations that followed, iterations of Dracula have been cemented in mainstream cinema. This anthology investigates and explores the far larger body of work coming from sources beyond mainstream cinema reinventing Dracula. Draculas, Vampires and Other Undead Forms assembles provocative essays that examine Dracula films and their movement across borders of nationality, sexuality, ethnicity, gender, and genre since the 1920s. The essays analyze the complexity Dracula embodies outside the conventional landscape of films with which the vampire is typically associated. Focusing on Dracula and Dracula-type characters in film, anime, and literature from predominantly non-Anglo markets, this anthology offers unique perspectives that seek to ground depictions and experiences of Dracula within a larger political, historical, and cultural framework.

Portal Hypertension - ECAB
  • Author : Abraham Koshy
  • Publisher : Elsevier Health Sciences
  • Release Date : 2012-06-07
  • Category: Medical
  • Pages : 112
  • ISBN Code: 813123181X

Summary: Defined as a portal pressure of 12 mmHg or more, portal hypertension results from a combination of increased intrahepatic vascular resistance and increased blood flow through the portal venous system. Esophagogastric varices is the most important complication of severe portal hypertension because of the high risk of bleeding and mortality associated with them. Ascites is another important complication which may at times be refractory to treatment and may also get complicated by spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and hepatorenal syndrome. Portal hypertension is a predictable and preventable condition but has no definite cure. An aggressive approach to prevention and treatment of portal hypertension is therefore warranted. Treatment of portal hypertension is evolving rapidly and many changes in the therapeutic protocols have been incorporated in recent times. Endoscopic treatment of the bleeding varices and prophylactic role of beta-blockers to prevent rebleeding are well-established therapeutic options. The measurement of the hepatic venous pressure gradient may identify a suboptimal response to beta-blockers in patients at risk of bleeding from varices. However, the costeffectiveness of routine hepatic venous pressure gradient measurements to guide primary prophylaxis has not been examined. Besides these, there is a definite role of somatostatin analogs and shunt surgeries in the treatment of portal hypertension and its complications. This book is designed to update the reader on all such issues related to diagnosis, treatment and complications of portal hypertension along with supportive typical case scenarios. Thus it provides an excellent opportunity to widen one’s perspective in this area.

Angus & Robertson and the British Trade in Australian Books, 19301970
  • Author : Jason D. Ensor
  • Publisher : Anthem Press
  • Release Date : 2013-10-01
  • Category: History
  • Pages : 268
  • ISBN Code: 1783081058

Summary: ‘Angus & Robertson and the British Trade in Australian Books, 1930–1970’ traces the history of the printed book in Australia, particularly the production and business context that mediated Australia’s literary and cultural ties to Britain for much of the twentieth century. This study focuses on the London operations of one of Australia’s premier book publishers of the twentieth century: Angus & Robertson. The book argues that despite the obvious limitations of a British-dominated market, Australian publishers had room to manoeuvre in it. It questions the ways in which Angus & Robertson replicated, challenged or transformed the often highly criticised commercial practices of British publishers in order to develop an export trade for Australian books in the United Kingdom. This book is the answer to the current void in the literary market for a substantial history of Australia’s largest publisher and its role in the development of Australia’s export book trade.

Perinatal Medicine - ECAB
  • Author : Shirish N Daftary
  • Publisher : Elsevier Health Sciences
  • Release Date : 2012-07-05
  • Category: Medical
  • Pages : 176
  • ISBN Code: 8131232239

Summary: Perinatal medicine encompasses various current topics in fetal diagnosis and management, besides preconception counseling. The concept of preconception counseling and healthcare evaluation optimizes a couple’s readiness for childbearing. This helps to minimize any foreseeable adverse factors through a careful diagnostic review and provision of appropriate intervention and therapy in advance. This has been dealt with in detail. The section on etiology and management aspects of Intrauterine Growth Retardation (IUGR) covers investigation and management of suspected or known fetal abnormalities, placental failure, and fetal growth retardation. Prenatal diagnostic procedures had limited access and safety so far, but this is a thing of the past today, especially after the advent of real-time ultrasonography. It brings an increasingly clearer visualization of the intrauterine space and has vastly broadened the scope for fetal diagnosis and treatment. The currently available ultrasound-guided procedures for fetal diagnosis and therapy are discussed at length in the chapter invasive ultrasound procedures. The discussed invasive ultrasound procedures include amniocentesis, cordocentesis, and chorionic villus sampling, done to detect neural tube defects, fetal lung maturity, and chromosomal abnormalities. The controversies surrounding the evaluation of fetal anomalies by ultrasound procedures are covered at length which we expect would be of special interest to the readers. Opinions abound as well as differ on the interpretation of the findings and counseling of couples, based on the same. This section focuses on the implications of missed fetal anomalies in this background and its impact on pregnancy outcome.

Wow
  • Author : Bill Manhire
  • Publisher : Carcanet Press Ltd
  • Release Date : 2020-10-29
  • Category: Poetry
  • Pages : 88
  • ISBN Code: 180017005X

Summary: A Poetry Book Society Winter 2020 Recommendation Bill Manhire's Wow opens with the voice of an extinct bird, a song from anciency, and takes us forward into the present and the darkening future of other extinctions. For Manhire, the reach of the lyric is long: it has the penetration of comedy, satire, the Jeremiad, but also the delicacy of minute detail and the rhythms of nature's comfort and hope, the promise of renewal. In the title poem the baby says 'Wow', and the wonder is real at the world and at language. But the world will have the last word. Writing of Manhire, Teju Cole declared, 'Being the leading poet in New Zealand is like being the best DJ in Estonia, impressive enough on its own terms. But Bill Manhire is more than that: he's unquestionably world-class. As with Seamus Heaney, you get a sense of someone with a steady hand on the tiller, and both the will and the craft to take your breath away.' Bill Manhire was New Zealand's first poet laureate. He established and until recently directed the International Institute of Modern Letters at Victoria University of Wellington. This is the ninth of his Carcanet books in 30 years. They include a Selected and a Collected Poems.

Greening the Academy
  • Author : Samuel Fassbinder,Anthony Nocella,Richard Kahn
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release Date : 2012-12-30
  • Category: Education
  • Pages : 226
  • ISBN Code: 9462091013

Summary: This is the academic Age of the Neoliberal Arts. Campuses—as places characterized by democratic debate and controversy, wide ranges of opinion typical of vibrant public spheres, and service to the larger society—are everywhere being creatively destroyed in order to accord with market and military models befitting the academic-industrial complex. While it has become increasingly clear that facilitating the sustainability movement is the great 21st century educational challenge at hand, this book asserts that it is both a dangerous and criminal development today that sustainability in higher education has come to be defined by the complex-friendly “green campus” initiatives of science, technology, engineering and management programs. By contrast, Greening the Academy: Ecopedagogy Through the Liberal Arts takes the standpoints of those working for environmental and ecological justice in order to critique the unsustainable disciplinary limitations within the humanities and social sciences, as well as provide tactical reconstructive openings toward an empowered liberal arts for sustainability. Greening the Academy thus hopes to speak back with a collective demand that sustainability education be defined as a critical and moral vocation comprised of the diverse types of humanistic study that will benefit the well-being of our emerging planetary community and its numerous common locales.
