Summary: A Darker Shade of Magic, from #1 New York Times bestselling author V.E. Schwab Kell is one of the last Antari—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black. Kell was raised in Arnes—Red London—and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand. After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure. Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive. "A Darker Shade of Magic has all the hallmarks of a classic work of fantasy. The Brighter Side of a Darker Thing Book
  • Author : Kathy Leigh Berkowitz
  • Publisher : WestBow Press
  • Release Date : 2013-01-17
  • Category: Self-Help
  • Pages : 176
  • ISBN Code: 1449781551

Summary: The Brighter Side of a Darker Thing is a testimony of one woman’s journey of healing from sexual abuse. Kathy Leigh Berkowitz takes a final step toward her healing in the public telling of her life and her recovery from her past, ending with a bold resolve to continue sharing her story, in hopes that others likewise may find healing. Fallout from abuse often leaves behind broken pieces of a shattered self-esteem and many questions about “the why.” The author explores her own feelings and shares her innermost thoughts, while encouraging the reader with Scriptures to allow the Holy Spirit to do His perfect work, the strengthening of the inner soul. Kathy Leigh also faced numerous other challenges, including the death of her baby sister, her mother’s mental illness, her father’s post-traumatic stress disorder, time spent in a Texas orphanage, poverty, and suicidal thoughts. The Brighter Side of a Darker Thing includes triumphant moments, her awards for various high school beauty pageants, the births of her four children, and the eventual path that led her to a full-time career in journalism. The Brighter Side of a Darker Thing is proof that a person’s past doesn’t define who they are, and that no matter the pain, there is hope and healing in Jesus. It is the author’s belief that healing from sexual abuse is a lifelong journey, but along the way, there will be much cause to celebrate, especially when one walks through the portal of forgiveness.

Summary: Expanding on the concept behind Byron Preiss's Weird Heroes from the 1970s, George R. R. Martin's Wild Card series, and Michael Chabon's McSweeney's Mammoth Treasury of Thrilling Tales, The Darker Mask is a collection of original prose stories recalling the derring-do of the beings we call Superheroes and the worlds they fight to save. But unique to The Darker Mask stories is that these plots and characters color a literary universe outside of what has been predominantly white, idiosyncratic, and male in previous homages to pulp. This is the stuff of urban legends, new mythos, and extraordinary folks who might live in a soon-to-be-gentrified ghetto, the dreary rust-belt of the city, or in another dimension. The Darker Mask offers an eclectic mix of popular fiction writers exploring worlds gritty, visceral, and fantastic. Including stories by: Walter Mosley, L. A. Banks, Naomi Hirahara, Lorenzo Carcaterra, Tananarive Due and Stephen Barnes, Mike Gonzales, Gar Anthony Haywood, Ann Nocenti, Jerry Rodriguez, Reed Farrell Coleman, Doselle Young, Mat Johnson, Peter Spiegelman, Alexandra Sokoloff, Christopher Chambers, Gary Phillips, Victor LaValle, and Wayne Wilson. Summary: A lush gothic tale that begs for reading...I couldn't put it down." —New York Times bestselling author Sarah Maclean I was obssessed. It was as if he called to me, demanding I reach out and touch the brushstrokes of color swirled onto the canvas. It was the most exquisite portrait I'd ever seen—everything about Lord Denbury was unbelievable...utterly breathtaking and eerily lifelike. There was a reason for that. Because despite what everyone said, Denbury never had committed suicide. He was alive. Trapped within his golden frame. I've crossed over into his world within the painting, and I've seen what dreams haunt him. They haunt me too. He and I are inextricably linked—bound together to watch the darkness seeping through the gas-lit cobblestone strets of Manhattan. And unless I can free him soon, things will only get Darker Still. Summary: Award-winning author Barbara Cleverly returns with this spellbinding new mystery featuring aspiring archaeologist Laetitia Talbot. In Athens in 1928, Letty begins a perilous race to unearth a plot steeped in betrayal, seething with retribution, and about to explode in a wave of lethal violence. In the open-air theatre of the dark god Dionysos, Letty watches a performance of an ancient Greek tragedy. But the revenge that is exacted onstage, the dagger that is wielded, and the blood that flows in full view of the audience are not theatrical effects. As Letty digs for clues, she unearths disturbing secrets and dark animosities with catastrophic implications worthy of a Sophocles—but of far more recent vintage. Now, as a killer cuts a merciless swath across a country in the throes of political instability, Letty herself steps unawares into the murderer’s savage spotlight—a light so bright she may not be able to see the dark figure behind it until it’s too late.

  • Publisher : Dog Ear Publishing
  • Release Date : 2016-06-30
  • Category: Poetry
  • Pages : 310
  • ISBN Code: 1457547678

Summary: This book is a continuation of the content and format style of what was to be found in this writer’s immediately preceding book Light and Dark, 1982 edition revised. (August 2015) If you read or sampled and liked that book then you’ll likely find this one equally or maybe even more to your taste. The alphabetical arrangement by title in that first book took you from Aardvark to Zeitgeist where this one moves you along from About Backbones And Breakfast Foods to Zero Heroes. Between its “A through Z” arrangement you’ll encounter a strange and often epileptically eclectic selection of richly mixed subjects, topics and treatments which this writer had at some point felt some compelling need to put on paper for his own relief and the possible amusement or edification of “imagined others”. If you’re in this group then this book is for you. If, however, you should have an insensitivity, let alone active dislike for rhyme and alliteration in your reading matter then this book, most especially should you be reading this in some braille version, since it might very well prove “toxic to touch” best you promptly put it down and move on to another and safer shelf or pile. Seriously though, this collection does offer a full spectrum of the silly and the serious often inextricably intertwined within the uncomfortably containing body of the very same composition, rather like a hot mustard pickle relish thickly spread between the cut halves of a sweet bun. Yes De gustibus … de gustibus! But please, if you’ll let me be clear, if perhaps, a little Ogden Nashy here … without too much … fusstibus!
