  • Category: Fiction

Summary: A fierce novel about the postpartum experience filled with “dark humor and brutal honesty” (People). A year has passed since Ari gave birth to Walker, though it went so badly awry she has trouble calling it “birth” and she still can’t locate herself in her altered universe. Amid the strange, disjointed rhythms of her days and nights, and another impending winter in upstate New York, Ari is a tree without roots, struggling to keep her branches aloft. When Mina, a one-time cult indie musician—older, self-contained, alone, and nine months pregnant—moves to town, Ari sees the possibility of a new friend. And despite her unfortunate habit of generally mistrusting other females, they soon become comrades-in-arms . . . With piercing insight about the isolation and unrealistic expectations suffered by new mothers in our society, After Birth is about pregnancy and childbirth that is “vicious, hilarious, and above all real” (The New York Times Book Review). “[A] scaldingly and exhilaratingly honest account of new motherhood, emotional exile, and the complex romance of female friendship.” —Karen Russell, author of Swamplandia!

Bridging the Gap Before and After Birth: Methods and Technologies to Explore the Functional Neural Development in Humans
  • Author : Marika Berchicci,Silvia Comani
  • Publisher : Frontiers Media SA
  • Release Date : 2015-12-18
  • Category:
  • Pages : N.A
  • ISBN Code: 2889196879

Summary: Infant brain damage is a serious condition that affects millions of babies each year. The period from late gestation to the first year of life is the most critical one for the development of central and autonomous nervous systems. Medical conditions such as preterm birth may compromise brain function and the end result usually is that the baby may experience long-term neurological problems related to a wide range of psychological, physical and functional complications, with consequent life-long burdens for the individuals and their families, and a high socio-economic impact for the health care system and the whole of society. During the last years, several techniques have been employed to monitor the brain functional development in utero and after birth. As well, various analytical methods have been used to understand the functional maturation of the brain and the autonomous nervous system. However, in spite of the rapid improvement of diagnostic methods and procedures, there is still a widely recognized, severe shortage of clinically viable means for the high quality monitoring of the brain function in early life with a direct relevance to acute neurological illness and future neurocognitive outcomes. The studies collected in this e-book document the most recent advancements in monitoring systems, analytical methods and clinical diagnostic procedures that contribute to increase our knowledge of the functional development of the human brain and autonomous nervous system during pregnancy and after birth, with the ultimate goal of reducing fetal impairment and improving healthcare in the neonatal and infant period.

Spirit Blending Foals Before and After Birth
  • Author : Harold Wadley
  • Publisher : Trafford Publishing
  • Release Date : 2003
  • Category: Nature
  • Pages : 166
  • ISBN Code: 1553956907

Summary: This book is a reflection of my heritage with horses. It comes from both sides of the saddle, so to speak, because both of my grandfathers were excellent horsemen. One grandpa was Cherokee and rode with the Kiowa horsemen in the early days of Indian Territory. They call it Oklahoma today. He gave credit to the Kiowa people for our unique way of working with a mare in-foal in order to blend our spirit with the foal. My other grandpa was an early day cattleman in Indian Territory and was known for his good-minded cutting and roping horses. I was blessed to have been born into this rich mix of horse and cow savvy. As a kid I was careful to take the best of both worlds, the Indian World and the Cowboy World, and develop my way of working with horses. The horses and mules like it. The day-to-day steps of working with the foal and mare ensured a lifetime of harmony with that horse. Each of the 37 chapters takes the reader or rider through each progressive training phase, emphasizing the easy, patient way the movements should be presented to the horse. The spirit blending starts with the mare first then progresses to the unborn foal. This special attention is continued right through the birthing process with the highlight coming at two years of age when the young horse is ridden for the first time. The foal is first taught to lead and "soft" tie at one and two days old. By the time it reaches two years of age it has been taught to readily load into a trailer, stand tied, yield to rope pressure from each leg, stand tied with a snubbed down head, back on voice and body cues, and to be ground led across country as well as ponyied from the mare. I term the essential ingredient of my technique, once the foal is born, "assurance pressure". It creates a sound foundation and willing mind in a horse. It is the glue that holds the spiritual blend together. It lasts for a lifetime with your horse. Praise for Spirit Blending Foals Before and After Birth, An Old Way Continued Dear Mr. Wadley: I LOVE your book Spirit Blending Foals Before and After Birth, An Old Way Continued. It is a priceless bit of Western History, and horsemanship, and equine behavior... Robert M. Miller, D.V.M. (Thousand Oaks, CA)

Water, Birth and Sexuality
  • Author : Michel Odent
  • Publisher : CLAIRVIEW BOOKS
  • Release Date : 2014-03-26
  • Category: Medical
  • Pages : 156
  • ISBN Code: 1905570732

Summary: ‘After the historic student revolt in France a period of audacious creativity resulted. The watchword was: “It is forbidden to forbid”. We took advantage of this transient cultural folly to do what would have been impossible ten years before or ten years after, introducing in the maternity unit of a state hospital an inflatable outdoor pool as a way to replace drugs during birth.’ – from the Introduction In this groundbreaking book, Dr Odent takes as his starting point the world-famous work on childbirth at Pithiviers, where he first noticed the strong attraction to water that many women have during labour. As well as discovering the practical advantages of water during the birthing process, he began to consider the meaning and importance of water as a symbol. Water, Birth and Sexuality examines the living power of water and its erotic connotations. Odent evaluates what water meant in different cultures throughout history, through myths and legends, and what it means for us today: from an advertiser’s tool to a metaphor for aspects of the psyche. He also studies humanity’s special relationship to dolphins, and the related ‘aquatic ape’ theory. A practical section on the use of water during birth and in various therapies, particularly sex therapy, is included. This edition of this classic work features a new Introduction.

Midwifery and the Medicalization of Childbirth
  • Author : Edwin R. Van Teijlingen,George W. Lowis,Peter McCaffery,Maureen Porter
  • Publisher : Nova Publishers
  • Release Date : 2004
  • Category: Medical
  • Pages : 393
  • ISBN Code: 9781594540318

Summary: This book provides an introduction to the sociological study of midwifery. The readings have been selected to highlight the interplay between midwifery and medicine, reflecting the medicalization of childbirth. It highlights the major themes in both a historical and a current context, as well as western and non-western societies. Two major themes underlie the organization of this book: that the conception of midwifery must be broadened to encompass a sociological perspective; and that the ongoing trend toward the medicalization of midwifery is crucial to an understanding of the historical, current, and future status of midwifery. By medicalization of childbirth and midwifery the author mean the increasing tendency for women to prefer a hospital delivery to a home delivery, the increasing trend toward the use of technology and clinical intervention in childbirth, and the determination of medical practitioners to confine the role played by midwives in pregnancy and childbirth, if any, to a purely subordinate one.

  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release Date : 2014-08-11
  • Category: Fiction
  • Pages : 302
  • ISBN Code: 1499059426

Summary: Steve is screwed! The mountains of central Pennsylvania surround him as he stares helplessly at the old Volare oozing oil onto the roadbed of the desolate highway. Confused and disgusted, Steve laments that this is merely another thorn in the side of this contemptuous day which began when he called it quits with his long-time girlfriend. The relief he had been experiencing only moments ago by being hours away from her have been replaced with uneasy concern because he realizes he's also hours away from his desired destination. He is stranded, but he is not alone. The black hitchhiker Steve had picked up earlier is quietly studying him. Due to Steve’s selfish and cynical punker attitude, the two didn’t hit it off from the moment they met, and this is why Calvin is having trouble deciding on whether to hang around with Steve until help arrives or to ditch him entirely and resume hitching. After all, they'd both probably be better off without one another. However, what the two strangers aren't aware of is that the events over the next few hours will impact their lives with such profundity that they won’t be able to escape the respect and bond which results between them. Only the cruel, bitter reality of the world can break those chains, and unfortunately, it eventually does.

Brain Literacy for Educators and Psychologists
  • Author : Virginia Wise Berninger,Todd L. Richards
  • Publisher : Academic Press
  • Release Date : 2002
  • Category: Education
  • Pages : 373
  • ISBN Code: 9780120928712

Summary: Although educators are expected to bring about functional changes in the brain--the organ of human learning--they are given no formal training in the structure, function or development of the brain in formal or atypically developing children as part of their education. This book is organized around three conceptual themes: First, the interplay between nature (genetics) and nurture (experience and environment) is emphasized. Second, the functional systems of the brain are explained in terms of how they lead to reading, writing and mathematics and the design of instruction. Thirdly, research is presented, not as a finished product, but as a step forward within the field of educational neuropsychology. The book differs from neuropsychology and neuroscience books in that it is aimed at practitioners, focuses on high incidence neuropsychological conditions seen in the classroom, and is the only book that integrates both brain research with the practice of effective literacy, and mathematics instruction of the general and special education school-aged populations.

The Ethics of Abortion
  • Author : Christopher Kaczor
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release Date : 2014-12-05
  • Category: Philosophy
  • Pages : 280
  • ISBN Code: 1317907949

Summary: Appealing to reason rather than religious belief, this book is the most comprehensive case against the choice of abortion yet published. This Second Edition of The Ethics of Abortion critically evaluates all the major grounds for denying fetal personhood, including the views of those who defend not only abortion but also post-birth abortion. It also provides several (non-theological) justifications for the conclusion that all human beings, including those in utero, should be respected as persons. This book also critiques the view that abortion is not wrong even if the human fetus is a person. The Ethics of Abortion examines hard cases for those who are prolife, such as abortion in cases of rape or in order to save the mother’s life, as well as hard cases for defenders of abortion, such as sex selection abortion and the rationale for being "personally opposed" but publically supportive of abortion. It concludes with a discussion of whether artificial wombs might end the abortion debate. Answering the arguments of defenders of abortion, this book provides reasoned justification for the view that all intentional abortions are ethically wrong and that doctors and nurses who object to abortion should not be forced to act against their consciences. Updates and Revisions to the Second Edition include: -A response to Alberto Giubilini’s and Francesca Minerva’s now famous 2012 article, "After-Birth Abortion" in the Journal of Medical Ethics -Responses to new defenses of Judith Jarvis Thomson’s violinist argument -The addition of a new chapter on gradualist views of fetal moral worth, including Jeff McMahan’s Time-Relative Interest Account -The addition of a new chapter on the conscience protection for health care workers who are opposed to abortion -Responses to many critiques of the first edition, including those made by Donald Marquis, David DeGrazia, and William E. May
