We’re In The News & Broadening Our Shoulders

Dr. David Benevento Interviewed On KCRA Channel 3

Our new marketing team, KFB Public Affairs, has only been with CCA for a couple of weeks and they already secured a KCRA 3 news story featuring an interview with our very own Past President, Dr. David Benevento. To view the story, click on the video below or click here

In meetings with KFB Public Affairs, I spoke of our challenge to draw a link in the minds of the public and politicians between the opioid epidemic and chiropractic as the solution.  As you know, current solutions to the epidemic solely focus on drug formularies and mandatory training of medical doctors on how to prescribe opioids appropriately (AMA opposes mandatory training of course).

Within days of this conversation, KFB Public Affairs pitched a story on this subject to Mike Te Selle of KCRA 3 in Sacramento. Mr. Te Selle interviewed Dr. Benevento and two of his patients at his wellness facility in Folsom this week and also highlighted AB 2407.  It was a pleasure to watch Dr. Benevento represent chiropractic articulately, with dignity and distinction.  Our KFB Public Affairs team handled everything media-related and I was able to provide deeper background on the political aspects of the opioid epidemic. A great team effort!

We’ll be able to use this story to enhance our efforts in the legislative arena moving forward.

Dr. Afshin Kaivan-Mehr Attends Important Board of Chiropractic Examiners Meeting

Dr. Benevento isn’t the only CCA member working in the field to promote chiropractic and CCA. Check out this picture of Dr. Afshin Kaivan-Mehr representing CCA by attending the May19th BCE meeting in SoCal. CCA staff attends BCE meetings in Sacramento and as members of various task forces on various issues, we’ll travel to meetings on occasion.  But, we can’t cover everything without the help, generosity, and ferocity of our members. Thank you Dr. Kaivan-Mehr!

Dr. Kevin Cressey & Dr. Dennis Buckley Represent At Portantino Fundraiser

Dr. Kevin Cressey was also flying the CCA flag on personal time.  Check these pictures of Dr. Cressey and his wife at a fund raising event for CCA endorsed Senate candidate Anthony Portantino.

Dr. Dennis Buckley was also having a great time at this event. Additionally, CCA was a Platinum Sponsor.  That’s how we roll!

From T.V. News, to regulatory activity, to political action, our doctor volunteers are working hard to protect and enhance chiropractic in California.  That’s also how we roll!

2016 CCA Convention & Marketplace – BE THERE!

Speaking of political action, our 2016 Convention & Marketplace is next week. If you haven’t registered for it yet, DO IT NOW!  You not only get your CE taken care of, it’s the best time you’ll ever have getting it.  Where else are you going to get your CE while basking in paradise on the beach, hanging with your friends and family at the bonfire beach and pool parties?  Did I mention the morning beach yoga and paddle boarding?

CCA staff cranks 14 hour days on site to make sure everything works as it should, but it’s the most fun I’ve ever had working that hard.  Imagine how much fun you’ll have!

NEW for 2016! We’ve added the PAC Yacht Cruise on Thursday night to launch the festivities. All the proceeds support our political action committee.  Who doesn’t want to watch the sunset from a yacht while eating fine cuisine, imbibing adult libations while supporting our PAC?

Seating is limited for this exclusive event, but there are still a few seats left.  Don’t miss out!  Register now!

2016 Election – Independent Expenditure Mailings & More

Speaking of our PAC...  We’ve been really busy already this election cycle.  We’re deep into helping one of our endorsed Assembly candidates in Santa Clara County, Ash Kalra, make it to the General election.  Ash Kalra, as you may know, seriously considered becoming a chiropractor and visited all three of our colleges in California before ultimately attending law school.  Getting super pro-chiro candidates elected to office is a huge goal of ours and carpe diem is a call to action for us.

Check out one of the two mailers CCA-PAC designed, produced and distributed as an Independent Expenditure Committee activity.  The second mailer won’t be in mail boxes until next week, so we can’t make it public yet.

These are exciting times for CCA and chiropractic.  We are making a concerted, cohesive, and comprehensive push to advocate, educate, and elevate chiropractic in the public’s and politicians’ minds.  No small endeavor, no small feat.

As you know, one of the main goals of the Corner is to create the space for members to be comfortable interacting with their GA team.  Given the increase in communication I’ve witnessed since I came on board, I’d say we’re moving in the right direction.

One recent interactive experience has been centered on conversations about how to reconcile CCA’s election support for candidates who supported the mandatory vaccination bill. This may not be an issue for every CCA member, but for many it is a very big issue.

I would counsel those facing this conundrum that:

  • CCA was created for no greater purpose than to enhance and protect the ability of chiropractic to exist and flourish in California.
  • SB 277 did not impact our ability to practice our profession in California.
  • Many legislators that voted for SB 277 have been, and continue to be staunch supporters of chiropractic.
  • As a profession, I will argue we can’t afford to use SB 277 as a litmus test for who to support if we expect to continue making a living as chiropractors in this state.
  • For any questioning their support of CCA because we continue to work arduously on behalf of the profession in spite of the position taken by some legislators on a single issue, I would hope they realize that if we were even stronger, the outcome of SB 277 might have been different.
  • Every DC in the state needs to join CCA, if they have any desire to see chiropractic not just survive, but thrive.

I know it’s distasteful, but the political realities and CCA’s mission haven’t changed.

My duty to CCA is to use every political tool I’ve amassed in 25+ years in the business to protect and enhance chiropractic.  That’s a tall order in and of itself.

But I understand as a result, it is easier for me to move on from SB 277 and swallow the bile of my discontent, because there is so much work to be done.

It is my hope, dream and mission that every chiropractor in California joins in this work.  As an old Jewish proverb says, “I ask not for a lighter burden, but for broader shoulders.”

That’s all the news that’s fit to print, and some that probably isn’t…for now.
